Teaching from a room..in a zoom. Covid 19 Lockdown level 4 New Zealand

Teaching from a room

Lets get smart

Term 2- week 2

It occurs to me part way through the week - I really must get smart about how to do this! I adjust my timetable and start to think about scheduling when i do tasks and mapping out the week so that I have work sprints, meetings and scheduled times for marking.
I put together a detailed timetable.

I do some thinking about 'becoming Agile & Lean - for covid 19"
What I am looking at is the idea about being sure that I'm working efficiently. Especially since one of my main difficulties,is workload. I realise that, it's because I am creating so many new resources, and I am  so excited!
I develop my own planner for covering the key tasks in a week, using this example by Katrian Ward I found this while looking at posts in a a facebook group- Mindshift.

My own version is a much more simplified and written on on a scrap of paper!
Basically mapping my week into 4 key stages;

  • Creating learning tasks that are varied and relate to learning.
  • Planning lesson content and recording video on how to do the newly created tasks.
  • Scheduling the work - timing to align with google meets to explain tasks
  • Checking engagement - marking / returning work.
Then reflecting  on how its going and adapting/modifying.

Reflecting on the week..

My week was reasonably good though I feel that I have low levels of engagement.
I have notified the Y11 cohort via in school messaging, though we are constantly being made aware that not all of our Akonga and whanau are in a good position  to do the learning on-line for many reasons.
Feedback form AKO, HOF + Curriculum leaders and senior management also came in this week with the message that the students were overwhelmed with the amount of work being set. I reduce my expectations and extend the due dates in the google classrooms as a result.

By the end of, the week, I have a few new insights about the life of a remote teacher.
More discoveries;
Students can bomb your google meetings and ruin a session ๐Ÿ˜’
 You can get so absorbed in what your doing that hours  can pass before you realize that you haven't had a break to walk around and eat.๐Ÿ˜ข
Things take time...like its takes 2 hours to make a google forms activity, especially when you are a perfectionist who to get all the right pictures!. ๐Ÿ˜€

A few Gems...
I am excited to put to use all of the skills that I gained during the MINDLAB and the DFI courses, that I undertook. Putting to use and being proud of what I can do.

My unofficial learning team 'ladies who lunch' are all helping each other to learn stuff as and when we need to know. No judgements.
I create a Staff Anzac biscuit cooking comp, and create a padlet to help with judging and its cool!
